ANUK | With Love From Lanka
My travels take me all over the globe and give me an opportunity to explore and appreciate various cultures, cuisines and traditions. I also get to meet so many wonderful women (entrepreneurs) along the way and draw inspiration from them all. The common thread that binds these women is their love for their families, friends and culture.
Sri Lanka has a special place in my heart because I’ve spent some wonderful time in Lanka learning about the beautiful country and it’s people. Apart from the aquamarine waters, I love Sri Lankan Fashion the most. Rapidly evolving and really very chic, Sri Lankan designers are definitely going places.
I recently chanced upon @anuk_official on Instagram and was truly delighted with what I saw. One thing led to another and I connected with yet another fabulous entrepreneur trying to create a unique experience through her designs for all those who wear them and see them. Samaadhi Weerasinghe, the founder and creative director of Anuk – my new favourite (Sri Lankan) clothing brand is a young woman with a great vision. If like me, you want easy to wear and style pieces that are classic and comfortable all at once, then Anuk is the perfect brand for you. If I had to use one word to describe designs by Anuk, ’Lazy elegance’ would be it.
When I first chanced upon Samaadhi’s designs online what appealed to me was the concept behind her shoots and images. I loved how she has tried to incorporate forgotten pieces of Sri Lanka and wanted to celebrate Colombo and it’s history through the images. The focus was on the silhouettes and the fabric, yet the entire composition was like a story untold.
Anuk’s designs are simple and luxurious all at once, making you feel special as soon as you don them.
Boss babe Samaadhi, much like me, grew up in a business family and was exposed to the world of business, textiles and international trade early on. After spending her weekends, accompanying her father to work and accompanying him on many international work trips she was slowly inducted and trained by him on the styles, fabrics and cuts that work internationally. Over time Samaadhi developed a unique sense of style and taste. Her stint as a student in Australia exposed her to the fashion scene in Sydney where she assisted at the Sydney Fashion Week. On her return she reconnected with Fashion through the Colombo Fashion Week and thats when she was sure that Fashion was her calling. Samadhi took about a year to work on Anuk, a brand she named after her brother Anouk ( yes now you know why I totally love her and the brand…)
Anuk/ Anouk means graceful and classic and that is exactly what her brand stands for. What I really love about her design philosophy is that she brings old school charm to new age styles by playing around with cuts, silhouettes and fabrics. Her deep understanding of textile & fabrics helps her use the finest of silks and cottons to bring us an amalgamation of culture, art and style all through her kaftans, tunic dresses and jumpsuits. She also works with handloom fabrics for custom made and unique pieces. Her current collection is made from the finest of silks and each style comes in 1-2 colours with just 4-5 pieces in each, thereby giving us yet another reason to love her brand.
Samaadhi draws inspiration from her family and her best friends who are scattered around the world. Soft-spoken and an introvert of sorts, Samaadhi has already been making waves in the Sri Lankan Fashion scene. She’s been featured as one of 5 Sri Lankan designers to watch out for by Vogue and has also been featured in Verve & Elle.
Her designs are made of the finest fabrics and retail starting $ 75 upwards. Anuk will be launching a website soon with international shipping, however currently you may DM her on Instagram (@anuk_official) and place an order like I did, she shipped it quickly without any hassle and I was ecstatic with the quality and finish. She participated in a pop up at Bungalow 8 last year and recieved an overwhelming response. She is currently retailing out of PR Sri Lanka in Colombo. Anuk will soon be available at select boutiques in Mumbai and New York.
With my birthday just around the corner, I know what I plan to wear for my birthday <3, images to follow sooon !!
