BossBabes | 5 Books You Should Read This Monsoon
There is absolutely nothing like curling up in bed and reading a good book in the rains. Watching the waves splash against the rocks and the water pour down from the sky making the pattering sounds it does against the windows…
I am so far behind on my reading list and while I always try to spend about ten to fifteen minutes before I turn in, Netflix and Amazon Prime (and now recently Hotstar thanks to my brother who gifted me the subscription) has taken over completely and eaten into all my reading time. However this weekend we are off to Lonavala and have no Netflix at home so it is just me and my Kindle and of course the rains !
Here are a few books I’ve read in the past few months and think were cool enough to recommend. These are books to help you step up your entrepreneurial game or just your game as a Woman in life and I promise to share a list of light reads soon !
This is a book that will ring home for a lot of you. Well it did for me and is (yes surprise surprise) still something I am learning to work around. I remember that when I started working I used to work so hard and then there were women who weren’t as hardworking or smart (sorry I know I sound so full of myself here but it’s truuuu) and they would get better reviews and pay hikes and appreciation in general. Of course over the years (a decade to be precise) I have learnt how to tackle this but books like these have definitely helped me out and I am sure will help you as well.
This ground breaking book explores the personal & societal reasons women seldom ask for what the need, want, deserve at home and at work. As you read along you also discover the crucial skill of effective negotiation. It’s about asking for what you deserve – nicely but firmly and definitely without the guilt ! As I read the book it caused a paradigm shift in my understanding of what true and fair negotiation is and should be. While I am brilliant at work related negotiations, I do or rather did struggle with personal negotiations both at work and home back in the day and still do in some cases.
Random fact – Did you know, men negotiate upto 9x more than women do ?
Read it : If you want to get that shove to start asking for what you want in your life, from things like which movie to see this weekend or where to go for dinner or getting that right mindset to negotiate that raise (something I used to struggle with back in the day).
If you enjoyed reading #GirlBoss you will enjoy this book. Ideal for ALL Professional Women (no matter the experience, age, position or industry) , anybody who is grappling with issues of perfectionism or trying to grow in their chosen careers will benefit from reading this. 25 successful & influential women share their toughest professional experiences through a series of interviews by Jessica Bacal.
Read if : You want to learn that mistakes are to be taken as a step to learning more and getting better. Even those who are most powerful, assertive and thoughtful have had their share and have thus grown.
The genius boss babe who created Grey’s Anatomy ( I am still to finish it – season 13 is so far away, I might become MD Aarti by the end) and Scandal inspires us through this book. In a poignant, candid and hilarious memoir, Shonda explores her life before success, from her introvert-ish nerdy years of childhood to her life as a mommy of 3 . I loved this one the most because I keep talking about how we must all live for ourselves and push ourselves to love ourselves more and live for us before others. We all end up in a slump phase at some point and need a good kick to get moving…this might just kick start the journey for some of you…
Read If : You are looking for some inspiration as Shonda shares her journey and how she learned to explore , empower and love herself. Read it if you’re looking for a self help book that negates all our excuses to not pursue our dreams and love ourselves.
This one is everywhere – at the airport, at the bookstore, online and even pirated copies at the traffic signal at Haji Ali. It was the gazillion images on Instagram that got me to order my copy (which is now with my dad…). It’s a book that you need to read when you’re down and out. It literally teaches you the art of NOT GIVING a Fu*k. We have to learn that as Human Beings we are all flawed and limited in our own ways. You may reread it for it to mean something totally new but it’s amazing ….The book helps us accept that we have limited time and energy and that we should pursue that which is in our control and worthy of our time.
Read if : You are a perfectionist , have a pile of excuses or are too driven to survive the year or are just overwhelmed with issues that should not pull you down at all….
If you haven’t read Nice Girls Don’t Get The Corner office : Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers then definitely read that first, but this one is just as nice if not nicer for a kick in the butt that we all deserve for being Nice !
Read if : You want to learn more about skills you need to transform our lives from being just a nice girl into a winning woman or girl boss – not just at work but also in life in general with our families and everyday.
There are soooo many books I want to read..will keep sharing the ones I love with you. If you have read a Book that has impacted you in any way or one that you just enjoyed reading (even the saucy ones ) do share with us !
