Channel Parisian Chic Wherever You May Be !
If I had to pick a city after Mumbai, it would be Paris for me. Even though the first time I visited Paris was when I was in my late 20’s I fell in love with the city instantly. All those who know me well, know that I love French Food, French People, French Perfumes and that my dad is a French Knight, yeah how cool is that !
What I love most though is French Fashion and je ne sais quoi , charm of the French. For those of us who don’t get to spend enough time walking on Champs Elysees, I think we can bring a bit of Paris into our everyday lives…I know we’ll never actually be French but lets admit it, it’s fun to pretend to be !
I just think the simplest way to do so is to sorta, kinda dress and look at and act the part… One could simply wear the ‘I woke up like this’ hair or cute button down blouses or the perfect shade of red or even chic accessory pieces like the ones available on Cult Curators ,whats not to love about the whole effort ? Of course dressing head to toe in Chanel or Dior is the easiest way to do so, but even simple changes or additions to our wardrobe can add to the whole look and feel and lets face it, is more do-able than living in Chanel. Here are a few of my favourite French girl tips …
Own A CHANEL Bag
I say this because I feel a Chanel Bag is an investment, so start saving girls. Everyone must invest in a Chanel Bag. I mean investing in one timeless item (even if it’s the only one) is never a bad idea, and the pièce de résistance of any French woman’s closet is definitely a CHANEL bag.
Wearing one will instantly help your French-girl aura and make you feel very Parisian. My favourite piece is a vintage Chanel Clutch that I often ‘borrow’ from my mums wardrobe (see she invested and I am benefiting) or the graffiti backpack that has accompanied me around the world and is one of my favourite and prized pieces.
Dress The Part
It’s extremely critical to have the perfect black blazer as part of your wardrobe if you ever want to feel Parisian Chic. Apart from the red lipstick, the French love their blacks, browns and greys. It could be a straight boyfriend style black blazer from Zara or H&M, just make sure it fits you well. Of course, if there’s detailing and the blazer has gold hardware or silk lapels or even puffed sleeves (I bought one six years ago from Zara and it is my most well worn piece over jeans, skirts or even pants . Throw it on over anything, and you will always look effortlessly put together.
I also invested in a couture black leather jacket, that always adds to my outfit when I travel to cooler climates. Have lots of ‘Black and White’ in your wardrobe, a simple black pair of pants or a skirt teamed with the perfect white blouse with some frills, can instantly make you feel very Parisian.
Add to that some gold or chunky jewellery and a red lipstick and you’re good to go !
Always Enjoy Your Food
The French love their food. Very rarely will you hear a Parisian women speak of being on a diet. I think the key to their flawless skin and fit bodies is that they eat right. They also walk a lot and enjoy their meals.
Unlike most women in Mumbai, Parisian women will sit down and enjoy their coffee or drink – in the middle of the week, like they have no were to go or be. You will often see them sit outside and read a book as the sip on their drinks and gaze off into the distance and master that French nonchalance that we love.
Take a break once in a while and work out of a café.
Eat good food – Eat healthy and right. Order French Gourmet brands online.
Always Act Nonchalant
A key aspect of being chic is acting allusive. Not cold, however, just mysterious and always charming.
Own Statement Jewellery
It need not be Chanel or Hermès but it can definitely be glamourous. Parisian women dress simply in their whites and blacks and throw on a statement necklace or big bold earrings or even chunky stackable gold bracelets to complete the look. I recently discovered Cult Curators and I can confidently say that every single of their pieces is fabulously Chic. You may also invest in statement clothing like a nice smart denim jacket that is very versatile to wear…
You should also enjoy vintage accessories – yes that bracelet from your grandma just got super chic !
Enjoy French Music
Have you been to Pali Village Café and enjoyed the ambience there ? I love how they play French Café music there all the time. Apple and Google Music now give us access to amazing French Pop songs that are fun to listen to whilst driving around or just working out of the house..
I’m currently listening to a song called La Rose Blanche as I work on this post.
Always Have Fresh Flowers at Home
This is something that I picked up from a family friend who has lived almost all her life in Paris. Her house ALWAYS has multiple floral arrangements. Nothing fancy, just roses thrown together in vases collected over a period of time. Enjoy the colour and fragrance of these flowers whatever the season.
My friend and table stylist Ami Kothari has some fabulous basic arrangements that I promise to share soon, simple flowers from Dadar Floral market can transform the way your house looks. Trust me on this.
Always Wear Perfume
This one is more a hygiene rule don’t you agree ? Smelling good lifts your mood and is great for those around you. Need not be an expensive French brand, just smell good !
One of my all time fave French perfumes is Éclat by Lavin.
Always Leave Them Wanting More
The rule to live by in France is ‘less is more’. Master being subtle in your actions, phrases and gestures. Be cool, but cute (but cool). And never forget to be chic.
Simple isn’t it ? Enjoy the essence of Parisian life wherever you are !
