The banyan or Indian fig is the national tree of India. A flourishing symbol of longevity, the largest banyan tree in India is said to be over 250 years old and spreads over 4.67 acres in Howrah (West Bengal). For thousands of years, people have used various parts of the banyan as medicine. Even today, many villages in India have their meetings in the shade of their own banyan.
