In India, the coconut is celebrated as a symbol of prosperity and health. Coconuts, in different forms, are known to be anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic. During World War II, coconut water was used to treat dehydration due to the shortage of medical supplies. Coconuts are also useful for fashioning handicrafts and are an essential cooking ingredient in the South. Found abundantly along the long coastline, coconut leaves and lumber are also used to make homes.
